I was an inner city youth and then an urbane urbanite, having lived in NYC, Denver, Chicago, and London. However, the call of the wild was still strong in me, having led me to Alaska. It was then I realized that a boat is important on an island, LOL. But more importantly, you need a good and experienced captain to teach you about these lands (or waters in this case). Xander’s Taxi, Troll, and Tours offers all of the T’s. He also teaches English and Chess at the middle school (having done so for decades and decades), and can teach you about the literary significance of Sitka: like Ed Rickets and Jack Calvin and Hemingway. I’ve eaten herring eggs straight off the ocean, heard gray whales, visited the hot springs, and gone to see the volcano, all with his seamanship skills. Yes, I threw up several times. But he knew how to best use that to chum up the waters, which led me to catching the first salmon of the season. Overall, I’m surprised why I haven’t written this review sooner. But everyday when I’m back in the office in a crowded city, looking at spreadsheets, I remember the blue water and the co-captain Finn the Dog along with Captain Xander showing me the beauty of America often not seen. Here’s a haiku: Captain Xander’s Ship. Oh, the places you’ll go. Like… That Dr. Seuss Book. 11 out of 10.

Tongass Troll’s Captain Xander is top notch, and his skill and professionalism are apparent from the moment you step onto the boat. Xander gave us a detailed briefing before we departed the harbor, and his craft was well-outfitted with high-quality safety gear, including the life jackets we donned. He provided safe, comfortable passage to and from Kruzof Island and Fred’s Creek Cabin, even after we had been told conditions may not allow us to reach the cabin. Having worked as a float plane pilot in Alaska for the past ten years, I am always skeptical of a captain’s judgement. Xander’s ability to judge the current conditions as well as his willingness to turn around if the conditions did not allow a safe landing set him apart from his competitors. I highly recommend Captain Xander and the Tongass Troll and will put my family on his boat again with complete confidence in his skills and judgement.

Great trips with a great captain (and excellent dog Finn)! I’ve had Cap. Xander for a number of different water taxi trips to nearby cabins or hot springs, and wildlife tours for folks visiting town. He knows the water, wildlife and history of Sitka and is great at sharing all that great knowledge, while being very safety conscious and professional. As a local Sitkan, I highly recommend Tongass Troll!

Captain Xander was great. My friend and I headed to the Fort Rousseau causeway at a very low tide, and he was prepared with two different landing spots and even a canoe on top of the boat in case neither were accessible at such low water. Luckily we didn't have to use it! It was easy to coordinate and on time. Captain Xander also had a bunch of interesting local color about things like the boats in the harbor, sights around Sitka, and more

Xander is truly a one of a kind human and Captain. If you want to unlock the magic and secrets of the Tongass and Sitka, he is your guy. Listen carefully because he regularly drops nuggets of information. An amazing guide, a great resource, and he will keep you safe and inform you on how you can keep you safe. Can’t say enough about Capt. Xander and the Tongass Troll!

Couldn't recommend Xander as your captain enough! Booking a cabin trip for your classmates and yourself is not an easy task, but Xander took a huge weight off. Seriously so patient, flexible, and generous. He helped us bring things on and off the boat, while being incredibly warm and friendly. Also side note: the boat ride was really fun and I saw views that I don't think I'll ever experience again in my life. And of course Finn was a wonderful co-captain as well. 6/5 stars. Thanks Xander!

Captain Xander was excellent. He met us in the parking lot of the harbor and filled us in on the safety information and local facts the whole ride to Mt. Edgecumbe. When it was time for pick up from the island, Captain Xander went out of his way to contact us and wait for us to arrive on the beach for the return trip as there was a storm approaching and we needed to get back to Sitka quickly. Thank you Captain Xander for an unforgettable trip and for getting us around safely!
