This place is historic and the setting is spectacular. It's too bad its food and service are so careless and just below average. We went there on a beautiful autumn Sunday evening after a lovely hike and drive around the lake. Expecting a special experience, we ordered from a promising but pricey menu. Our server took over 20 min to ask if we would like a drink. Fifteen min later he came back for our order. The food was very average - and disappointing considering the price. A piece of salmon, string beans and cauliflower $30+. No one checked on our table throughout the meal, and it was not until we waved to the waiter that our plates were removed and a while later dessert menus were dropped at the table. Our waiter seemed overwhelmed, very stressed, and altogether distracted. When I went to find him to request the check, he was no where to be found.

Considering the reputation of the Hopkins Inn, and our expectations considering the gorgeous setting and the prices on the menu, we were all together disappointed.

Beautiful, traditional New England Inn overlooking Lake Waramaug in a quiet and very scenic part of Connecticut. Staff is very friendly. Simply decorated but comfortable rooms have great views of the water. There's also access (10 minute walk or 2 minutes drive) to their sand beach for swimming in the cool, Crystal clear water. Restaurant has varied menu and many well prepared entrees. Sort of all American cuisine. Moderately priced and cozy. The "snowball" is a vanilla ice cream scoop rolled in coconut flakes -- very popular. Place gets lots of repeat visitors. Not particularly kid friendly. Too quiet.

Absolutely picturesque location. The room was squeaky clean, roomy and accommodating. We had everything we needed. The food by far was outstanding. Max provided dinner recommendations that did not disappoint and our breakfast was out of the world. We'll definitely be returning.

This place is a treasure. Set on a hill overlooking the gorgeous lake this inn is a few hundred years old. It feels like you are in Germany or Austria. Even the staff dresses up. The food is outstanding either way many European options. Like I said, it doesn’t feel like Connecticut. Amazing!!

An unfortunate birthday dinner which included rude service, extremely bland and food, and legitimately undrinkable house red wine. The Hopkins Inn restaurant is a shame on dining culture as a whole, and it is a pity to see such a beautiful property go to waste. Do not waste your time coming here for a dinner, if you respect food in any amount. I grieve for those who come here to try German cuisine for the first time, as they will leave thinking they do not like German food.

Beautiful location!
Old establishment, nice rooms, i got king size bed however only one chair.. Shaky table.
Don't come on Monday
It's basically closed. the place fills abandoned.the restaurants is closed.
No food, no coffee or tea or just cold water in the lobby.
First day wasn't a good experience. The second day.... The restaurant was open but if you want hot water for tea you need to go to the restaurant. Not like other inns. It's only for sleeping. And did i mention the beautiful view. I'll find better place next time.

I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this restaurant. My wife, her friend, and I arrived just after 10 am, expecting to have breakfast. We hadn’t checked the serving hours, so we waited to be seated. An older woman was on the phone and saw us standing there but ignored us for at least five minutes. When she finally looked over, she rudely asked, “What do you want?”

I asked if they were still serving breakfast, and she snapped, “No, we only serve from 7-10 am.” Her tone was unwelcoming, and her attitude made us feel like we were a bother just for being there.

I understand that we arrived slightly past breakfast hours, but there’s no excuse for such unprofessional and disrespectful behavior. A simple explanation delivered politely would have made a huge difference. This kind of treatment is unacceptable, and I would never recommend this place to anyone. I certainly won’t be returning.

Great scenery beautiful setting. But disappointed with the food. Service was good . But it is expensive for what you get. Your better off sitting outside on the the patio with just apps and enjoying the views.
