Southern Hills has the best staff! They took wonderful care of my mother. She was there a few years ago for a short time and then we took her home. When it was time to put her back in a facility last fall we immediately called them. They remembered her and our family even though it had been so long. The staff shared stories with me about mom and how much they all loved her. The building is always clean and doesn't have that nursing home smell. With their care my mom was gaining back some of the weight she had lost, was eating properly, and was always nice and clean. When mom passed last week, the staff cried right along with us. They treated her with such love and compassion. I am so glad she was able to spend her last 6 months in such a nice place. I would recommend them highly!

We could not ask for a better place for my son! Southern Hills Specialty Care is a down home, close knit, loving "family" staff! They are always on top of things, along with compassion and great care for our loved one! Highly recommend them and refer them to anyone looking for a Care Center that will give you peace of mind you're in good hands. Thank you so much for being our Guardian Angel over my son!

My mother has only been at Southern Hills for a few months, but I have been extremely happy with the her quality of care. The staff treats her with love & compassion. They communicate clearly & regularly with me. Our family has had experience with four other LTC facilities over the last 12 years here in Iowa. Southern Hills is by far the very best we've experienced.

I don't feel they gave our Dad a chance to get acclimated to their facility, stating they couldn't keep him safe after a 2 month stay. We never received an explanation of why, just they couldn't keep him safe over and over again. They had an alarm on his room door that was off many times when we would visit. His hygiene care was horrible and he slept in his clothes. One on one was mentioned and we were told we would have to pay for that. If you have a loved one that wanders or wants to go home, this is not the place for them, "they can't keep them safe." If you have questions, you may or may not get straight answers. This has been a huge wall in the road and we will never have a "why" to our questions. Shady...

We had my gpa with Alzheimer’s disease, placed in this facility and our family was grateful that they were able to take him so he could be within 2 miles of my gma. This turned into nothing but a stressful situation. When we inquired about placing him here, we were told that he didn’t sound like he would need a memory care unit, which he didn’t. He had a room in the main area and like all residents, he wanted to go home. Only once, the staff reported to us that he had made it out the court yard doors accompanied by staff….before his 2 month mark of being there, they said they couldn’t keep him safe… okay…to me they were concerned about the competency of their staff. The staff are still there, yet we were forced to move my gpa, AGAIN, to another facility. This facility was the worst I’ve encountered and I have actually worked in several as a nurse myself. Never once have I seen a facility want to discharge a resident for wandering or exit seeking! He had no behaviors other than the want to go home. The worst part of this has been that he is hospice and him nor his family found any “comfort” at this facility. I do not recommend this facility because I believe they are a cop out. They gave up on my gpa within 2 months and didn’t allow him to get use to his new move. When I’d call for an update, staff would report that he was doing well and had only tried getting out the door the once, but he would pack his stuff once in awhile like others would do. Unfortunately, the blame, in all actuality, was placed on their staff….unable to “keep him safe….” Beware…

I have had my grandma, Emma Myers and my mother -in-law, Karen Voshell both receive care at this facility at different stages in thier lives. Both received excellent care and the staff was amazing. I will continue to advocate for this facility. Without them I would have been lost. Thanks again!!!!!

My mom was there for about a month. We almost lost her to pneumonia during that time. Lucky that my sister and I checked on her that day, and that a responsible nurse manager was doing her job. Otherwise, my mother would not be alive. The nurse assigned to her said that he had just taken her vitals. Right. How can a person develop full-blown pneumonia in both her lungs in less than 20 minutes? Fortunately, the nurse manager called the ambulance and Mom was taken to the hospital and later transferred to Des Moines ICU. She has since recovered after a week and a half in the hospital. And, we have since decided to move her to a safer place.
