Review of the Rose and Heather Garden Tour

My mother-in-law, sister-in-law (the Leopard Ladies), and I recently embarked on the Rose and Heather garden tour, and it was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived in London, where we stayed in a charming hotel near excellent food and shopping (recommended by our wonderful host, Gillian), to the final day at the Chelsea Flower Show, the experience felt like many small trips wrapped into one.

The tour began with a comfortable bus ride with about 12 others, and each day was an adventure. We explored private gardens, national gardens, and even had the unique experience of staying in a castle and a spa. One of the highlights was our stay in the picturesque town of Rye at the lovely St George hotel.

Gillian's deep connections in the horticultural world were evident throughout the tour. We were granted early access to some national parks, enjoyed private tours led by head horticulturists, and even got into a garden reserved for Royals—an unforgettable privilege (though we couldn’t take or share photos).

The tour concluded just before the Chelsea Flower Show, which was the perfect finale. The entire city of London seemed to be celebrating gardens, with shops beautifully adorned in floral displays reminiscent of Rose Bowl floats.

The best part? I simply showed up, and Gillian took care of everything. It was a relaxing, educational, and incredibly special way to bond with my Leopard Ladies. Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a well-curated garden experience in England!

“The garden selections were fantastic. Historical value, whimsical and absolutely beautiful. The private gardens were a very special treat. Each days’ travel was perfect. Very well planned out.

This tour ended up being a bucket list hit. Gillian knows how to create an experience that is all it should be: great gardens, history, accommodations, transport, the whole deal. I can highly recommend it to anyone who loves garden design, history and beautiful English landscapes.

When my planned May 2020 Rose & Heather Garden Tour was cancelled because of the pandemic, a full refund was sent within days! I was impressed, and am now looking forward to going in May 2022. Previous tour members have attested to Gillian Gray's charm, knowledge, and the great pleasure she takes in sharing both public and private gardens in the countryside she knows so well. I love that we will be staying in charming historic or country hotels, and I can't wait to attend the Chelsea Flower Show! What a joy to travel with someone with this background, who can so capably negotiate logistics and details to provide a unique travel experience!

Recently I toured gardens in the Kent and Sussex countryside with Rose and Heather Tours. We traveled through the rolling green hills of southern England exploring many private and gardens, walked the cliffs of Dover and explored small, quaint villages. We visited historic castles and manors including the childhood home of Anne Boleyn and the homes of Rudyard Kipling and Sir Winston Churchill. The addition of historic and charming hotels, outstanding croissants, epicurean deals and shopping in small villages made for a delightful, educational, and memorable tour. Jillian did a fine job of choosing a wide variety of gardens for this Spring tour, from magnificently cared-for estates complete with a castle or manor house to an amazing backyard garden behind a home near the sea. Staying in historic inns and dining on tasty, festive meals in the evening were also highlights. If you love the colorful beauty that gardens offer, English history, and an easy traveling pace, this is a tour you should check out.
