My son and I just completed a series of three private lessons, to get introduced to fly fishing with Alex. Only good things to say. Have previously tried casting before with fairly comical results, but after these classes have a good grasp and a solid foundation to build on. Very friendly, great explanations and examples, lots of handouts for reference.

Would absolutely recommend. Looking forward to additional lessons and some guided trips as well.

Had a great time up north fishing the Burney Falls area. Alex was a great guide and source for knowledge and application of the various waters we fished. This led to his technical skills on approaching each body of water that needed specific conditions to get to the trout. This meant getting the fly down fast and in line with the flow to present correctly… Alex was exceptional at various mending techniques and stacking methods to keep the fly drag free. Great respect to Alex! Caught a lot of fish too during the process of letting my ego and stubbornness go! Haha. Thanks for a great time Alex and looking forward to our Santa Cruz fly fishing session off the beach!

Just got back from a fantastic trip flyfishing with my brother on the Fall River! This was our second time hiring Alex as our guide and I couldn’t be more pleased.

I took Alex’s “Discover Flyfishing Class” last summer and been having fun ever since. As an instructor Alex covered all aspects of flyfishing including casting, how to read the water, tying knots, and entomology. He conveys the information very well and is incredibly patient when teaching casting.

As a guide Alex has an incredible knowledge of the rivers in Northern California. He has been my guide on the following rivers; Upper Sacramento, Fall, Pit, and Hat Creek. He has brought my brother and I to the most pristine area’s of these rivers with the most fish to catch. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone who needs a flyfishing guide or lessons!

Alex is simply the best fly fishing guide and instructor I have yet encountered. He really understands casting and presentation and most of all, how to explain these concepts to others. He listens to you to best figure out a plan for your day together.

I met him through a class he taught with the Capitola Recreation Department (intermediate fly fishing). Before the class I had a basic cast down but it was not very good. In just 3 classes he taught us how to really understand our casts, evaluate them and improve them. He took a video of me casting so I could see the dos and dont's and work on them after the class. He also gave us a great packet of tips to take home as well.

We talked about my goals for fishing (independence on small hike-in trout streams) and went out for a day of fishing out of Burney, CA along a beautiful small tributary stream. It was so much fun and I left the day able to read the water better, choose my flies and caught more fish than I ever caught on both dry flies and droppers.

Later that evening we went out for the hex hatch on the Fall River. Amazing! I'd never seen anything like it. Alex keeps a boat in a boat house right along the river so it was easy to access the river. We got to see the evolution of the whole hatch as the sun set over Mt. Shasta. I also got to try. out my skills with stiffer rods and sinking line to try to get some of the fish going after the emergers.

He made us tasty breakfast sandwiches to eat on our way to the river in the AM and a yummy sandwich bar for lunch.

If you choose to go with Alex you will have a great time, see some beautiful country (he knows so much about the waters all around Shasta/N. California, including historical facts), learn if you want to, eat good food and have an interesting companion/guide for the day.

I am recommending him to all of my friends and am looking forward to going out with him on the water again!

My recent trip to Santa Cruz was the perfect blend of the "how-to" of surf fishing and fly fishing instruction. While I received personalized fly fishing instruction, my son and friend tackled surf fishing armed with hand-caught sand crabs (by Alex!) and spinning rods. The one-on-one guidance I received greatly enhanced my casting skill, while my companions reveled in the fun of surf fishing.
