Very cool place. The views on the nature walk alone are spectacular! Now add in the history and beauty of all the historic mounds and you have a must visit site.

Visitor Center is always a good stop. Gorgeous shaded tree trail. Bug spray, water, snacks, and hiking shoes for the win. Effigy animal shaped mounds. Little bear is easy to see. Several burial cone mounds are linked together like a string of pearls. The energy shifts a little at the view overlooking the river. Turn around and walk back. Early morning start as it began to rain on the walk back. Watch the weather. Mid-August 2024. This was the popular hike. It's a well visited site with someone ahead and a little behind you with pauses in between. Peaceful and time for meditation.

Beautiful area of NE Iowa along the Mississippi River. Wish I had realized that a full day here is necessary to hike the trails and see the amazing animal shaped mounds of the indigenous peoples. Fascinating history spanning thousands of years. Well worth an extended visit. You can see three conical mounds at the visitor center and if you bring your dog, get a junior barker badge.

Really a nice little interpretive center. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the history. There is a very small museum. The effigy mounds are definitely the reason to visit but the center is worth a stop (for more than just the restrooms)

Lovely side quest to our journey.

We didn't walk the trail: wrong shoes, part of the trail was under water.

Park staff were fantastic, and very knowledgeable.
The small museum was informative.

Amazing trails. I wish we had more time and energy to explore more of them. They were all well kept with wood chips and clear trail markers. Some great views from the top as well. Main trail is uphill with a quite a few switch backs so you've been warned but once you get to the top from the visitor center it got a lot easier so see the few land marks up top.

Great place to visit and learn Iowa history. The rangers in the center are great and knowledgeable. Be warned the gift shop is right inside the center if you have kids that love to shop! There is also a museum, auditorium with touch screens, and kid friendly activities in the center. The walk is pretty steep at first, I recommend a walking stick and a bottle of water. Be warned there can be poison ivy on the edges of the trail, though it generally gets marked and sprayed, but little hands are fast! There are also some steep overlooks, so younger kids (and everyone in general)should be watched carefully and told to go slow. I recommend early spring or late fall for colors, fewer bugs, and less humidity.
