A fantastic fort and museum. You can get a bus from the bus station which is around 28 mins away. From here you're dropped right outside the fort. The inside of the fort is great with various rooms set up to depict part of the forts long history. There is also a monument outside which is brilliant to look at.

A defensive fort built before WW1 turned to soviet prison, and then used by germans where countless people lost their lives. Now it serves as a grim but interesting museum. Guide is recommended for full experience.

This museum evoked a lot of strong emotions for me. At first, I found it a bit boring, until I got deeper into the museum and was completely entrenched in information about those who were kept there and their stories. There were beautiful exhibitions and just the right amount of detail and photographs.

It was snowing heavily and I had a bus to catch back to Vilnius or I would have been here all afternoon.

Oh, this place broke my heart. In the UK, I think we are quite insulated from the horrors of war. We read about it, watch programmes about it but it is only when you visit a place where the atrocities happened that you really get a feel for the hell that people went through. 50 000 people executed, buried, dug up again and burned to cover up what happened.
Highly recommended, but harrowing.

Very important place with lots of things to see and read about but it's in a bad condition. There are places with water on the floor and it's freezing cold inside.
