This bass derby festival was advertised on the local news, and we decide to take a drive to see what all the fuss was about. The previous day, you couldn't get near this festival because the only road, Highway 12 was blocked solid for miles in both directions.

We arrived about 10:30am to beat the crowds and was fortunate to get a parking spot close to the festival entrance. The festival itself was free to the public and included parking. Sections of N. Front Street had been cordoned off to allow for unimpeded foot traffic and parking.

The festival consisted of rides for the kids, vendors and food stalls along with a classic car display. At the end of the festival was the "Bass Tournament" booth where fishes were weight in for the final day on Sunday. One of the judges said the weigh in were conducted throughout the day.

Unfortunately, during our visit, no one showed up to display their catches. There was also a board listing who caught what fish and the weight of their catch.

Food selection here was sparse at best but the numerous vendors had a wide variety of goods for people eye shopping for a unique gift or two. The classic cars which were lined up and on either side of one street was really interesting and each vehicle had a story of its own.

The theme of this festival was about the Bass Tournament; however, you didn't get that vibe because nothing here was fishing related, i.e., no fishing gears, clothing, accessories, boats, rods and reels, etc.

Our overall experience was that I'm glad it was free to just take in the sights of the Sacramento River and the classic cars.

74th annual bass derby in Rio Vista, Ca. Always full days of a good time. Carnival for the kids. Good food for everyone. Rummage sale for charity. Old car show. Many booths to browse. Many crafts and jewelry. Don't forget signing up for the Bass Derby competion for prizes and money. If you missed this year, come out next year in October.

This event is right on the Sacramento River so its common to ocean going ships come and go up and down the river. The Derby includes rides, car show, music and big craft show, in addition to the fishing derby. Lots to do all over town.

Had a fun day in Rio Vista. Watched the weigh in on Stripers, Cat Fish and Sturgeon. And the funniest thing of the whole day was this little girl around 6 years old, and she caught a catfish and it was about 7 or 8 inches long and weighted a third of a pound and she was so happy to have caught something. There was also soap box derby races. That also was a blast. Every kid raced.
I had a fun time and will be there next year.
