I've climbed Shasta twice now with SMG, the crew here is exceptional among any mountain guide service. This most recent climb my teenage son joined us for his first big mountain summit and they were very helpful in teaching him the ropes. Don't let the naysayers in other reviews steer you away from this excellent guide service. I think a lot of people get upset when the weather ruins a summit attempt and blows the group off the mountain, a smart guide gets you off the mountain safely in that situation. Good guides account for many factors including group fitness level, weather, climbing conditions, etc. You can count on these folks for your safety.

I had an incredible experience with Shasta Mountain Guides (SMG) and cannot recommend them enough as a guide service. Their staff and ownership are all incredibly experienced and make efforts to impart their knowledge on to you as a client, explaining the conditions, techniques and skills, and challenges that help enable a successful climb and stay safe. They are also very responsive to questions ahead of the trip and offer you training suggestions to help get you in shape for the ascent.

Ultimately, the mountain decides if you're going to summit, and the guides work together to establish safety protocols and make the call to either make a bid or sit it out. Summiting is not a guarantee, but using SMGs all but ensures you will have a great experience on the mountain. Train hard, gear up, and they will make sure you have a good time!

This was my first mountain climb and I was very pleased with Mountain Shasta Guides' leadership to the summit! Joey and Skylar were our guides and they were extremely hard-working and knowledgeable, and great company, too. As a newbie climber, I felt safe and prepared the whole trip. First time using a guide company and first attempt at the Mt Shasta peak.
The communication pre-trip was awesome, quickly responsive to all questions, and helped set us up for this trip. The guides (Taylor, Mikey and Jullian) are knowledgable, positive and fun while ensuring we all were safe to go home and share our great experience. Peaking Mt Shasta is no easy feat. With great weather, the motivation they provided, and ensuring we were physically able to continue, made for a successful summit. Not only that, they really took care of us in camp. I learned a lot from the guides, and will definitely use Shasta Mountain guides in the future - highly recommend!!!

My husband and I just finished the 3 day expedition hike up Avalanche Gulch of Mt Shasta with SMG, with Mike Henry and Mike Perry as our guides. While we’d hiked a bunch before and been to high altitudes we’d never done any technical mountaineering. Everything from the word go was fantastic and the two Mikes were phenomenal. High winds kept us at Horse Camp both nights (bonus being we got a really thorough snow school and learnt a heap). Our guides put a huge amount of effort into coming up with a plan that would still give us a shot at the summit despite us not making it up to Helen Lake night 2. We summited with Mike Henry in a single push from Horsecamp. His professionalism and experience really showed. It was clear that safety was always his number 1 priority, yet he made it motivating and fun and he got us to the top and down in good spirits and without a hitch. Highly recommend SMG.
It was definitely a really challenging hike and we were very glad to have followed the SMG training program closely as we would not have been able to make it up from Horsecamp had our fitness been any lower.

Had a fantastic experience climbing Mt Shasta with Tailer, Joey, and Chris. All three guides were friendly, professional, personable, and extremely knowledgeable. They did a great job accommodating the group’s ability level and were very transparent and straightforward in their communication throughout the climb. They were happy to share their extensive knowledge and taught us a great deal over the course of the trip. We felt very confident climbing with SMG and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great mountaineering experience.
